Laser Treatment for Skin Cancer Scars Yields Good Cosmetic Results

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

laser treatment for surgical scarsA new study found that treating skin cancer wounds with a fractional CO2 laser yields good cosmetic outcomes.

The study found that fractional carbon laser treatment for surgical scars was effective, significantly improving the appearance of scars, reported Reuters Health. The laser procedure also allows for the scar to be treated immediately, rather than having to wait several months to have the scar resurfaced.

The study had ten patients who had Mohs surgery for skin cancers, with wounds that were from 3 to 9 centimeters long. Four of the wounds were on the face; three were on the neck; and three were on arms.

Half the wound was treated with a fractional carbon dioxide laser; the other half was not treated with the laser. The entire wound was closed with sutures, a liquid adhesive and Steri-Strips.

Nine of the ten patients said the side of the wound treated with the laser looked better than the untreated side at a two- to three-month follow-up visit. They also felt the laser-treated sides were “significantly better with regard to elevation, discoloration and erythema” (redness of the skin).

Three dermatologists who didn’t know which side of the wound had been treated with the laser reviewed photos of the scars and found the laser-treated side to be cosmetically superior in each case.

The authors are planning a multi-center study to confirm the results. “More importantly,” author Dr. David Ozog said, “we want to see if this technique will improve long-term outcomes of some of the most problematic scars such as sternotomy after cardiac surgery and large abdominal scars.”

For those without access to a doctor with a fractional laser, “dermabrasion still works, with a good safety profile,” said Dr. Kishwer S. Nehal, director of Mohs surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

The Top Nine Sunscreens, According to Consumer Reports

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Consumer Reports top-rated sunscreensWondering which sunscreens are most effective for protecting your skin this summer? Consumer Reports has named nine top-rated sunscreens after testing 22 creams, sprays and lotions.

Three sunscreens earned a Consumer Reports “Best Buy” rating:

  • Up & Up Sport SPF 30
  • No-Ad with Aloe and Vitamin E SPF 45
  • Equate Baby SPF 50

Six other sunscreens earned a “recommended” rating:

  • Banana Boat Sport Performance SPF 30
  • Coppertone Sport Ultra Sweatproof SPF 30
  • CVS Fast Cover Sport SPF 30
  • Walgreens Sport SPF 50
  • Ocean Potion Kids Instant Dry Mist SPF 50
  • Banana Boat Sport Performance SPF 100

According to Jamie Hirsh, senior associate editor of Consumer Reports Health, the ratings are based on UVA and UVB protection and how well they did in water. All of the top nine sunscreens received excellent marks for UVB protection, even after water immersion. To test water resistance, sunscreen was applied to the volunteers’ backs, and they were then submerged in water for 80 minutes, after which they were exposed to UV rays.

The top nine sunscreens were also found to provide good protection against UVA rays — the rays that are linked with aging (i.e., wrinkling, sagging, brown spots).

The ratings also showed that an expensive sunscreen isn’t necessarily more effective. For instance, one product that was $18.82 an ounce got an overall score of 79, while No-Ad with Aloe and Vitamin E SPF 45 (a Best Buy) costs 59 cents an ounce and got a score of 89.

Fighting the Signs of Sun Damage

A good sunscreen is important to protect your skin from harmful rays, but if you already have damage from past sun exposure, there are treatments that can help. For example, Fraxel Restore is a non-invasive laser resurfacing treatment that reverses the negative effects of sun damage, reducing brown spots, wrinkles and other imperfections.

Fraxel Receives FDA Clearance to Treat Age Spots

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Fraxel logoThe FDA has granted clearance for Fraxel re:store Dual—a non-invasive laser resurfacing treatment—to treat actinic keratosis (AK), which are sun spots, or precancerous spots.

Fraxel re:store Dual adds a 1927 nm wavelength, the first ever application of a Thulium laser in the aesthetics market, which is optimized for treatment of pigmentation and other superficial skin conditions, such as AK.

The FDA clearance was based partly on data from a six-month study of 21 patients with AK. Each underwent a series of two to four laser treatments, spaced two to four weeks apart. The results showed that the treatment yielded a mean 83.5 percent decrease in AK lesions on the face and other regions, including the arms, hands, and chest. Other reported improvements were in skin texture and pigmentation; no adverse events were reported.

“In our study, we found the Fraxel re:store Dual to be the most effective treatment of multiple facial AKs, as it is safe and requires minimal downtime while simultaneously improving other signs of photodamage,” said Dr. Roy G. Geronemus, director of the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York, in a news release. “While the 83.5 percent removal rate was comparable to other topical therapies and AK treatment options, Fraxel was overwhelmingly well-tolerated by all the patients and offers the added benefit of improving a patients’ overall skin quality, color and texture.”

Indications cleared by the FDA for the 1550-nm Erbium laser featured on the Fraxel re:store include skin resurfacing procedures and the treatment of eye wrinkles, acne scars, surgical scars, skin discoloration and pigmented lesions, such as age spots, sun spots, and AK.

Dr. Heffernan uses Fraxel re:store to treat patients with a variety of skin conditions and imperfections at his Seattle, Washington, office. Patients may see improvements after only two to three treatments.

Dr. Anne Chapas, a New York City dermatologist, explained to Meredith Vieira how she used Fraxel, Thermage, and Isolaz to help patients with a range of skin conditions, including skin laxity, acne, and sun spots—all without surgery.

Jill, a 40-something with years of sun damage to her skin, was treated with Fraxel Restore, a non-invasive laser resurfacing treatment. Dr. Chapas explained that Fraxel’s energy stimulates new skin cells to grow, which gives the skin a refreshed and more healthy appearance.

Jill says she’s thrilled with the results. “It really got rid of so much of the sun damage that I could see. It just makes me feel like I have fresh, new skin,” she says.

Dr. Chapas estimates that it usually takes 1 to 3 treatments to see results with Fraxel. Patients may have a few days of redness and a little dryness after the treatment, according to Dr. Chapas.

Dr. Chapas also showed how Thermage treatments can tighten the skin on various parts of the body. For one patient, who’s a mother of two, who was looking to tighten her midsection, Thermage was used on her belly.

Dr. Chapas also used Thermage to tighten another patient’s face. The Thermage treatment was followed by Fraxel the next week to help even out her skin tone.

Guest-Patient Blog: Fraxel Restore Dual Works Great for Hands

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

I am 44 years old and look about 10 years younger.  (Well, at least my face does, hand laser treatmentbut then I look at my hands!  Oh my how did that happen?)

I work out, eat well, maybe drink a few too many glasses of red wine but what about my hands?  I look down and see the dreaded pigmentation (I think they are called age spots) starting to appear on my aging hands.  This can’t be! And how am I going to fix it?

About 2 weeks ago, I went to my cosmetic surgeon’s office and discussed this issue and find a way to fix it..  He spoke with me about removing the pigmentation starting on my hands.  I told him whatever it he could please sign me up.

That day I had a Fraxel Restore Dual treatment done on my hands.  The procedure did not require any topical anesthesia and took about 15 minutes without much discomfort.  My hands were a little swollen and red for a few days and then after about 2 days I could see that the pigmentation was coming up to the surface of my skin.

I was elated because I knew that all of that pigmentation would flake off and be gone.  My hands looked like they had been sprinkled with coffee grounds for about 10 days but now look so much better.  One more treatment and then my hands will look more like 30-something instead of 40-something.

Video: Why Fraxel Restore Dual is Superior

Monday, November 9th, 2009

This video about the new Fraxel restore dual is geared toward physicians, but we thought it might be interesting for our patients to see as well.

From the video: “This new wavelength more effectively targets the superficial skin layers, resulting in an accelerated clearance of pigment for patients. The thulium treatment is more comfortable for patients and requires less anesthetic, allowing you to treat multiple body areas in a single session.”
