Guest-Patient Blog: Fraxel Restore Dual Works Great for Hands

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

I am 44 years old and look about 10 years younger.  (Well, at least my face does, hand laser treatmentbut then I look at my hands!  Oh my how did that happen?)

I work out, eat well, maybe drink a few too many glasses of red wine but what about my hands?  I look down and see the dreaded pigmentation (I think they are called age spots) starting to appear on my aging hands.  This can’t be! And how am I going to fix it?

About 2 weeks ago, I went to my cosmetic surgeon’s office and discussed this issue and find a way to fix it..  He spoke with me about removing the pigmentation starting on my hands.  I told him whatever it he could please sign me up.

That day I had a Fraxel Restore Dual treatment done on my hands.  The procedure did not require any topical anesthesia and took about 15 minutes without much discomfort.  My hands were a little swollen and red for a few days and then after about 2 days I could see that the pigmentation was coming up to the surface of my skin.

I was elated because I knew that all of that pigmentation would flake off and be gone.  My hands looked like they had been sprinkled with coffee grounds for about 10 days but now look so much better.  One more treatment and then my hands will look more like 30-something instead of 40-something.

Video: Why Fraxel Restore Dual is Superior

Monday, November 9th, 2009

This video about the new Fraxel restore dual is geared toward physicians, but we thought it might be interesting for our patients to see as well.

From the video: “This new wavelength more effectively targets the superficial skin layers, resulting in an accelerated clearance of pigment for patients. The thulium treatment is more comfortable for patients and requires less anesthetic, allowing you to treat multiple body areas in a single session.”

Anticipating Weather Changes and the Fraxel Dual

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

fraxel-re-store-dual-wavelength-before-and-after-photoThe first touch of fall is in the air today.  Clouds, light rain, south wind, sounds familiar?  We certainly have had a beautiful summer this year and I guess it is about time to expect to pay our dues a little bit with the normal fall weather change.

I want to remind everyone though that the ultraviolet skin harming rays will continue to pass through the cloud cover and we should not forget to wear our sunscreen even in the cloudy weather.

On the development side we are recently investigating the new FDA approved dual technology Fraxel laser.  We wrote about this in one of our previous entries.  This is very exciting technology because it allows the use of two very effective wavelengths.  The wavelengths can be used in combination to markedly decrease the number of treatments necessary to get the same clinical effect. Also, the wavelengths can be used separately for more specific skin needs.

Those patients who have some bothersome brown spots can now have those treated using the longer of the two wavelengths, without requiring topical anesthesia.  This will significantly shorten your visits and provide quick and predictable results.  We’ll keep you advised right here as we get closer to introducing this technology.

To the men who are reading this, we are scheduling a special pre-holiday men’s only event.  The event is scheduled for November 5, 2009, at the Sorrento Hotel from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.  We have our special visitors that night talking about Radiesse, Fraxel, and the latest approaches to physical fitness.

We look forward to seeing all of you there.

Eyelid Surgery Alternatives at Dr. Heffernan’s Office

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

We often hear this complaint in our office: “I am not ready for eyelid surgery but have noticed slight aging changes in the skin around my eyelids, so what alternatives are there to freshen up my look?”

Fraxel non-ablative laser resurfacing is an excellent option for patients who would like to achieve a renewed look without surgical intervention.

Fraxel is FDA approved for skin resurfacing and for treatment of melasma, periorbital (eyelid) wrinkles, and acne scars.  The treatments are done in two week intervals, with a total of 4 sessions indicated for best results.

Topical anesthetic is used to numb the eyelids before they are treated with a special treatment tip designed by Fraxel made specifically for this application.  The eyelid tissue will heal within 2-3 days.

We’re still running specials for Fraxel through the end of summer – contact us for details and pricing information.

Fraxel/Thermage to Open Aesthetic Center for R&D

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

frax-thermThe recently formed parent company of Thermage Inc and Fraxel – Solta Medical Inc., announced plans to open an ‘Aesthetic Center’ that will function as an R&D hub and physician training facility.

Activities within the center will aim to advance all of the innovative AED technologies that have been merged under the Solta Medical name.

The “Solta Medical Aesthetic Center” will incorporate an in-house clinic and a “biomedical engineering lab,” both of which are intended to foster more physician participation in ongoing product research.  In a company press release, dermatologist Vic Narurkar MD boasts, this “will allow the company’s optics and biomedical engineers to share data and receive immediate clinical feedback about their work in new product development and existing product enhancement.”

The facility’s opening is intentionally scheduled to coincide with the 67th annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology in San Francisco, which will bring together physicians and industry professionals for in-depth discussions on topics such as laser skin resurfacing and skin tightening.

New developments and collaborations in this field should create an environment ripe for new technological advancements in the cosmetic surgery and dermatology industry.

Here in Seattle, we look forward to new developments with Fraxel and will keep you posted.
