Supporting the Starlight Foundation in Washington

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

fingerpainterSome time ago, my staff and I began looking for a charity with meaning and purpose – both medical and spiritual – that speaks to the needs of our community and our children.  Through various channels, we came across the Starlight children’s foundation of Washington, and we said to ourselves, “this organization fits our criteria to a T.”

A debilitating illness is terribly hard on children and their families.  The Starlight foundation offers a variety of support programs for sick children, to help them cope and (hopefully) live more normal lives. They work with major children’s hospitals, providing educational web sites and programs, family activities, and many other things that help the vital aspects of family life continue.

We’re happy that the Starlight Foundation gives us an opportunity to help these families as they do everything they possibly can to ease the burdens of sick children.

On September 17, 2009, my staff and I look forward to supporting the Starlight Foundation through a major fundraiser, Fashion First in Seattle.  I encourage you all to come out, enjoy the wonderful fashions, and enjoy a wonderful evening supporting the Starlight Foundation.  If you cannot attend, feel free to donate to the starlight foundation through their website www.starlight-washington.org.

Eyelid Surgery Alternatives at Dr. Heffernan’s Office

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

We often hear this complaint in our office: “I am not ready for eyelid surgery but have noticed slight aging changes in the skin around my eyelids, so what alternatives are there to freshen up my look?”

Fraxel non-ablative laser resurfacing is an excellent option for patients who would like to achieve a renewed look without surgical intervention.

Fraxel is FDA approved for skin resurfacing and for treatment of melasma, periorbital (eyelid) wrinkles, and acne scars.  The treatments are done in two week intervals, with a total of 4 sessions indicated for best results.

Topical anesthetic is used to numb the eyelids before they are treated with a special treatment tip designed by Fraxel made specifically for this application.  The eyelid tissue will heal within 2-3 days.

We’re still running specials for Fraxel through the end of summer – contact us for details and pricing information.

Enhance Yourself – Enhance Your Job Prospects

istock_000008859561xsmallCompetition on the job market is fierce these days, and many people are considering the possibility that age, or their appearance, may be affecting their job prospects to some extent.

To get a little extra edge, many job seekers have turned to their hair stylist for a new look, or their local surgeon for Botox or Dysport wrinkle injections.  When you have to compete with young adults just out of college, who often accept a much lower wage, you need to present yourself in the best possible light.

Men and women are using some of their extra time to get a little touchup, with injectables like Botox, a wrinkle filler, or even eyelid surgery.  Botox is the number one minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in the U.S; according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 5 million treatments were done last year. The cost of a single treatment will vary, and it pays to keep an eye out for monthly specials and events.

If you are going for treatments prior to a job interview, give yourself at least 7 days to heal from Botox and other injectables. Remember, doing well on an interview is not only about how you look, but whether you exude confidence about yourself and your ability to do the job.
